Unemployment among the youth has been a major challenge across the country, affecting livelihoods and slowing down development. In response, government continues to roll out initiatives aimed at creating job opportunities for young people.
In the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality,According to Mr Dominic Gyasi the MCE for Sefwi Wiawso,a total of 214 youth have secured employment under various government programs designed to bridge the unemployment gap. These opportunities cut across security services, health response, agriculture, and other essential sectors.
Under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), 30 young people have been engaged as police assistants, 13 with the Fire Service, and 10 with the Prison Service. Additionally, 14 have undergone training as Community First Medical Responders to support healthcare delivery.
Other notable placements include 10 under the Ghana Blue Water Guard initiative, 17 recruited as Forest Guards, and 10 attached to the National Security setup. Six individuals have joined the Ghana Labour Exchange program, while one person each has been posted to Parliament as a research assistant, the Standards Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Signal Bureau.
Further placements saw 30 young people absorbed into the Driving, Road, and Infrastructure Program (DRIP), five with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), five with the National Lotteries, and 15 into the Seed Production Department. In addition, four have been engaged with the Cocoa Marketing Company.
Out of the total 214 placements, 173 are already at post in their respective fields, while the remaining 41 are preparing to start work. This spread of employment opportunities is expected to contribute not only to income generation for beneficiaries but also to enhanced service delivery across sectors in the municipality.
The initiative is seen as part of broader government efforts to empower the youth, reduce unemployment, and build a more productive workforce that contributes to national growth.
