The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Aowin, Mr. Stephen Morch, has disclosed that 33 excavators used for illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—have been seized in the municipality.
Speaking in a live interview with Green Gold TV, Mr. Morch revealed that illegal mining activities have caused significant destruction to water bodies and forest reserves in Aowin. According to him, the situation was already dire before he assumed office.
As part of efforts to combat the menace, he said military personnel have been deployed to assist in the operation. The 33 excavators arrested have been transported and kept under the care of the Aowin Municipal Assembly.
Mr. Morch reiterated his commitment to fighting illegal mining in order to protect the remaining natural resources in the area. He noted that although illegal mining has caused extensive environmental damage, the local communities have seen little to no benefit from the activities.
He further stated that his actions align with President John Mahama’s declaration of a state of emergency on illegal mining, and he is committed to enforcing the president’s directives.
The MCE clarified that he is not against responsible mining. He disclosed that about 40 miners are currently going through the legal processes to acquire licenses for legitimate mining operations.
“Our forests and rivers are being destroyed, yet the people gain nothing. It’s my duty to protect what’s left,” Mr. Morch emphasized.
