Ablekuma North: Attacks on journalists must not be tolerated – Kwakye Ofosu

The government has condemned the attack on journalists during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said that attacks on journalists must not be tolerated!

“The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action against an overzealous officer who assaulted a GHOne TV reporter at Ablekuma North this morning. Attacks on journalists MUST NOT be tolerated!” he wrote on his X page.
The Ghana Police Service has said the officer seen in a viral video assaulting a reporter during the Ablekuma North rerun on Friday, July 11, has been interdicted.

The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

We would like to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated,” Director of Public Affairs, ASP Richmond Mensah noted in a statement on July 11, 2025.

A journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, was allegedly assaulted by a police officer while voting was ongoing in the re-run of the parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who said he witnessed the incident, called for the said Police officer to be replaced because, in his view, ” he has a hot temper.”

TV3’s George Kwaning, who was on the grounds, reported that “The district police commander just arrived at the station for first-hand information on the journalist-police altercation.”
Kwaning further reported that “To resolve the issue, the district commander has asked the Accra Major to leave the area as his presence amasses people.”

Meanwhile, Banahene Agyekum, who received a slap from a senior police officer during the Ablekuma North rerun, has complained of pain in his right eye.

Speaking in an interview with TV3’s George Kwaning, the journalist noted that he would be unable to continue with his coverage of the election and needs an urgent medical checkup.

“Yes, (I won’t be able to continue work today, because my right eye is shaking and I don’t know what happened to my forehead. I have to go for a medical checkup,” he stated.
