Ablekuma North Rerun: No Military Deployment – Defence Minister Assures

The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has stated that his outfit will not deploy military personnel to the Ablekuma North constituency for the rerun of parliamentary polls today, Friday, July 11, 2025.

This follows public concerns over the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun 19 disputed polling stations after the December 2024 polls.

In a Facebook post Friday, July 11, the Minister noted that the government is committed to maintaining peace and democratic integrity during the polls, urging all eligible voters to cast their ballots without fear.

He assured that the Ghana Police Service, the designated peacekeeping agency within the jurisdiction, will be solely responsible for security during the rerun.

“There will be no military deployment,” he repeated three times in his post, to reassure the public and allay every fear of violence or politically tensed atmosphere.

The Minister expressed the need to take cue from previous incidents where lives were lost in the 2020 elections in Techiman South as were as the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election which was characterised by violence.

“Let’s learn from past experiences… and prioritise citizen safety and security,” he urged, highlighting the need to uphold democratic values while avoiding the mistakes of the past.

Dr. Omane Boamah further expressed confidence in the ability of the police to manage the process without any issues.

“The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job,” he affirmed.

Dr Boamah concluded his message with a call for calm and participation, encouraging voters to “keep the peace and make our voices heard as John Dramani Mahama resets Ghana and creates more opportunities for Ghanaians.”
