Ablekuma North rerun: Polls officially close at polling stations; sorting underway

Polls have officially been closed at several polling stations in the Ablekuma North amid the rerun in 19 polling stations.

The elections which started on a peaceful and smooth note, took violent turns midway with some key NPP executives being assaulted. Key amongst these assaults is the beating of former MP for Awutue Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, Deputy National NPP Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah.

Other persons including some journalists were also assaulted. However, calm was restored after police intervention and visit by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to some polling stations.

At 5pm exactly, polls were closed at a number of polling stations including; St. John the Baptist church, Odorkor Methodist 1, Ateco School Complex, Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor 2, Radiant way, Aseidu Gyedu memorial 1, MTTD Odorkor Divisional polling station and others.

Sorting has also begun with voting expected to commence for a winner to be declared.

Background of the Rerun

The impasse began during the collation of results last December when, according to the Electoral Commission (EC), political party supporters besieged the collation centre and destroyed an unspecified number of original result forms (Pink Sheets).

This led to the use of 37 scanned Pink Sheets, provided by the NPP, to continue the collation process.

The NDC objected, insisting on a full rerun in all 37 polling stations where scanned copies were used.

The NPP, however, argued that since NDC agents had verified the scanned copies, the results should stand.
