Akontombra District Assembly Supports Persons With Disabilities

The Social Welfare and Community Development Department of the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly has extended vital support to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote inclusion and economic empowerment within the district.

The distribution exercise, held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the District Assembly Conference Hall, saw the presentation of 30 deep freezers, 10 fufu pounding machines, 10 sewing machines, and cash assistance to more than 30 beneficiaries.

District Chief Executive (DCE) Joseph Appiah supervised the distribution and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities across Ghana. He noted that this commitment has been demonstrated through policies such as a minimum 5% empowerment quota in both public and private sectors and the introduction of free tertiary education for PWDs.

He explained that the Assembly’s intervention was guided by a recent needs assessment report, which identified key areas where PWDs required assistance. As a result, the Assembly provided medical, educational, and economic support in addition to the distributed equipment aimed at promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

Mr.Appiah further revealed that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government has increased the quota allocated to PWDs from the District Assembly Common Fund. He encouraged beneficiaries to make productive use of the items received to improve their standard of living and contribute meaningfully to community development.
