Tension is mounting in Tigarikrom, a suburb of Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality, following the alleged killing of a young man at a Chinese-owned illegal mining (galamsey) site.
The deceased, believed to be in his early twenties, reportedly died after being subjected to severe assault by security personnel at the site along the China Road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim—whose identity has not yet been disclosed—allegedly went to the mining site to steal a liquid substance suspected to be diesel. He was reportedly apprehended by security operatives and subsequently beaten multiple times before being restrained.
The Assembly Member for the Tigarikrom Electoral Area, Evans Addie, who confirmed the incident to Green Gold FM/TV, indicated that the assault occurred on the night of Wednesday, April 8.
Sources say the victim was later released the following morning after intervention by some community elders. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken home.
The incident has since sparked unrest in Tigarikrom and nearby Zongo communities. Aggrieved youth reportedly stormed the mining site in protest, setting two excavators ablaze and seizing another.
Police officers were later deployed to the area, where they managed to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased has indicated that burial arrangements will be conducted promptly in accordance with Islamic customs.

As of now, authorities have not issued an official statement. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to commence.
