Aowin MCE Launches Initiative to Reduce Youth Unemployment in the Municipality

The Aowin Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Stephen Morcher, has launched an initiative aimed at reducing youth unemployment in the municipality.

The initiative involves providing tricycles popularly known as pragyia and aboboyaa to young people under a work and pay system.

According to the MCE, many young people approached him, explaining that they do not have the qualifications to enter institutions such as the police, military, or other government services. They therefore appealed to him for support in acquiring tricycles to enable them to work and earn a living.

Mr. Morcher stated that he engaged some companies to help facilitate the initiative and secure the tricycles for the youth. As part of this effort, a company known as On God Ghana Ltd has been established to oversee the implementation and progress of the initiative.

He noted that although the government continues to create opportunities through programmes such as the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), the National Youth Authority (NYA), and the Forestry Commission, this initiative will further contribute to reducing unemployment in the area.

The MCE revealed that the company has a management team and a board in place to ensure proper supervision and sustainability of the programme.

He advised beneficiaries to take good care of the tricycles and strictly adhere to road traffic regulations. He emphasized that he will not support any defaulter, as he is personally committed to the success of the initiative. He also cautioned beneficiaries against drug use while operating the tricycles.

Mr. Morcher clarified that the Municipal Assembly is not directly managing the initiative, although the Assembly and government remain committed to promoting development in the municipality.

Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the MCE, stating that unemployment had pushed some of them into illegal mining (galamsey). They noted that the tricycles would provide them with a sustainable source of income and improve their livelihoods. They also pledged to work hard and repay the cost so that others can benefit from the programme.

Nana Kwame Asare Bempong, Mbrantiehene of the Aowin Traditional Council, commended the MCE and On God Ghana Ltd for their support. He described the initiative as a demonstration of effective leadership needed to create jobs in the municipality. He also thanked the President for appointing Mr. Morcher, noting that he is making a significant impact.

The Manager of On God Ghana Ltd, Joseph Mbawini, said the company, in partnership with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has organized an orientation programme for the beneficiaries at its own cost. He added that those without riding licenses will be assisted to acquire them before operating the tricycles.

He assured that the company will ensure all beneficiaries comply with road traffic regulations.
