ARMED ROBBERY GANG DISMANTLED ON THE OBUASI–DUNKWA HIGHWAY

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a dangerous armed robbery gang that had been operating along the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway corridor.

The breakthrough followed intelligence-led operations conducted on 10th and 11th March 2026, which led to a gun battle between the Police and the suspects, the recovery of firearms and ammunition, and the arrest of several accomplices connected to the criminal network.

According to the Police, on 10th March 2026, the Command received credible intelligence that a group of armed men had gathered in a bush along the Obuasi–Dunkwa stretch and were preparing to carry out a robbery attack.

A Police team was immediately dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the officers encountered about four armed suspects. The suspects opened fire upon seeing the Police and attempted to escape through the bush.

The Police returned fire, resulting in two suspects sustaining gunshot wounds, while the other two fled the scene through the bush.

The injured suspects were later identified as David Aheto, 42, originally from Sogakope but residing at Asin Fosu, and Illiasu Bawa, 32, a native of Banda Nkwanta in the Savannah Region.

Both suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital for treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival by medical officers.

Police investigations have linked the suspects to several armed robbery incidents across Obuasi, Dunkwa, Wasa Akropong, and Asin Fosu.

During the operation, the Police recovered the following weapons and ammunition from the scene:
One AK-47 assault rifle with serial number 68104599, loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition
One pump-action shotgun loaded with five live BB cartridges
Eight additional rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition
One spent BB cartridge
In total, 36 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition were retrieved.

Further intelligence revealed that Samuel Agyei, also known as “Africa,” and other suspects currently on remand at Wasa Akropong are members of the same robbery syndicate.

Investigations also pointed to Alhaji Abdalah of Asawase in Kumasi, who is alleged to have sold the recovered AK-47 rifle to the gang for GH₵45,000. He is also suspected to have sold a G3 rifle and a pistol to Samuel Agyei.

In a follow-up operation on 11th March 2026, Police arrested Aminu Iddrisu, also known as “0244.” He later led investigators to a location at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi, where an AK-47 rifle and a Bruni pistol had been hidden in a sack inside a sheep pen.

Police also arrested Daniel Debrah, 24, during further investigations. A search connected to his arrest led to the recovery of an unregistered red Toyota Corolla saloon car, suspected to have been purchased with proceeds from robberies carried out by the late suspect David Aheto.

Currently, Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman alias Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu alias 0244, and Daniel Debrah are in Police custody assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, the Police say intensive efforts are underway to arrest Mallam Aminu and other members of the gang who remain at large, and to recover additional firearms believed to be in their possession.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against armed robbery and illegal firearms trading, stressing that all persons involved in such criminal activities will be pursued and brought to justice.68104599.
