In politics, not every loss marks the end of a journey. Sometimes, it signals the beginning of clarity, strength, and renewal. The defeat of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, while disappointing, may ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise. For those who remain committed to the long-term vision of the NPP, this moment presents a unique opportunity to distinguish the true patriots from the mere opportunists.
A critical lesson emerging from the 2024 election is the exposure of individuals whose loyalty to the party was tethered solely to personal ambition. In the lead-up to the polls, many paraded themselves as staunch supporters of Dr. Bawumia. Yet, mere months after the loss, some of these same individuals are shamelessly switching allegiances, chasing new political fortunes elsewhere. Their true motivations have now been laid bare.
Dr. Bawumia, in his quest to lead both the party and the nation, placed his trust in many who claimed to share his vision. Had he won, some of these individuals would likely have secured top positions in government. But would they have truly served the party’s broader mission to modernize and rebuild? In hindsight, perhaps not. This electoral defeat, painful as it may be, has helped illuminate who the real patriots are—those who remain steadfast even in adversity.
Today, it is the faithful few—the unwavering believers in the NPP’s ideology and in Bawumia’s long-term vision—who still stand firm. These are not fair-weather supporters, but dedicated individuals who prioritize principle over position and party over personal gain. They understand that the path to future success requires loyalty, sacrifice, and unshakeable resolve.
This moment must not be viewed solely as a setback, but as a defining turning point. The party now has an opportunity to reposition itself, cleanse its ranks of selfish actors, and elevate those who have demonstrated loyalty and courage when it mattered most. Dr. Bawumia, now wiser and more discerning, is well-positioned to lead this next phase with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity.
One painful truth that cannot be ignored is the role of those who campaigned “skirt and blouse”—undermining the party’s parliamentary strength while pretending to stand with the presidential candidate. Ironically, some of these very individuals are now loudly throwing their support behind Alan Kyerematen. Their betrayal speaks volumes.
Let the real patriots stand up. The time to rebuild begins now. The defeat of 2024 is not the end—it is just the beginning of a renewed, reenergized NPP, ready to rise stronger than ever before.
