The Member of Parliament for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, has sponsored cataract surgeries for 602 constituents who were diagnosed with severe eye conditions. The intervention was carried out in collaboration with Daybreak Vision Eye Clinic and aimed at restoring sight for residents who could not afford the cost of surgery.

The initiative followed a free eye screening exercise organized in the constituency, where ophthalmologists identified 602 individuals with cataracts in urgent need of surgical operations. Many of the patients lacked the financial capacity to undergo treatment, prompting the MP to fully finance the procedures. All 602 patients have since undergone successful surgeries.
Speaking after the exercise, an ophthalmologist from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, who also serves as Country Director for Daybreak Vision Eye Clinic, Dr. Kwasi Ahmed, commended the MP for his commitment to eye health. He explained that cataract surgery is often very costly and noted that the financial support covered screening, surgery, and even accommodation for patients during their treatment.

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MP for restoring their vision. Some recounted that they had lived with blindness or partial blindness for years but could now see clearly after the operation. They confirmed that the entire process was free of charge and that no payments were collected at any stage.
Mr. Brefo explained that his motivation for the project came from observing widespread eye problems during his visits to communities across the constituency. He said it was his responsibility as a representative to respond to the health needs of his people, hence his decision to sponsor the full treatment package.
He added that the Bibiani Government Hospital initially connected him with Daybreak Vision Eye Clinic, a non-governmental organization based in the United States, which agreed to partner on the mission. Together, they conducted the screening, surgeries, and patient care to ensure the program’s success.

The MP emphasized that the welfare of his constituents remains a top priority, stressing that good health is key to productivity and economic development. He assured residents that the cataract surgery program will be held annually to provide more people with access to critical eye care services.
