Bibiani old town Turns Mining Site – MCE Intervenes with Security Forces

Illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, continues to dominate national discussions due to its damaging effects on the environment, water bodies, and national security. It has been a persistent challenge for both the previous and current administrations.

Across the country, unauthorized miners are exploiting forest reserves and polluting rivers, despite the government’s ongoing efforts to stop the practice. Galamsey has become a major threat to the country’s security and sustainable development.

In the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality, reports emerged about illegal mining activities taking place in Bibiani old town. Residents were allegedly digging holes in the community as part of their unlawful gold mining operations. An informant tipped off the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Sebastian Obeng, about the situation. In response, Mr. Obeng, accompanied by security personnel, visited the site to assess the extent of the activity.Upon inspection, the MCE confirmed that illegal mining was indeed taking place. He observed that some residents were using excavators to mine gold right in the heart of the town.

According to him, the miners claimed they would refill the holes after extracting the gold. However, Mr. Obeng ordered them to immediately cover the excavated areas. He warned that mining without a license from the Minerals Commission is illegal, and engaging in such activities within residential areas is a serious crime.

The MCE emphasized that he will continue to work closely with security agencies to monitor the area and ensure that illegal mining is brought to an end in the municipality.”If you want to engage in mining, go through the right channels and acquire the proper license,” he advised.Mr. Obeng vowed to fight the galamsey menace within the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality. Although no arrests were made during the operation, the authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.
