confirmed dead following a domestic fire outbreak at Mempeasem, near the Railway Station Quarters in Assin Foso, in the early hours of Thursday, January 8, 2026.
According to a press release issued by the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DO II Wasiu Abdul Hudu, and dated January 9, the fire was reported at 6:32 a.m.
The blaze involved a kitchen and storeroom and later spread to a Renault Duster salon car and a nearby wooden kiosk. Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to bring the situation under control by 6:40 a.m., preventing the flames from spreading to adjacent structures.
Unfortunately, a man in his thirties, identified as Kwabena Effutu, was burnt to death. His badly charred body was handed over to the Police and conveyed to the St. Francis Xavier Morgue.
The GNFS indicated that the kitchen and some contents, including the Renault Duster vehicle, were salvaged from total destruction. Investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause of the fire.
In a separate incident, a 44-year-old man died after falling from a storey building at the community center in Abuesi, located in the Shama District.
Assembly Member for the area, Enock Arthur, told Connect News that he received a distress call in the early hours of January 8, 2026, about a tragic incident at the site. Upon arrival, he found the deceased lying in a pool of blood.
The victim, identified as Frank Essilfie Ebea, was a local taxi driver who reportedly exercised daily on the building’s staircase before heading to work. Preliminary investigations suggest that the tires placed along the staircase for safety may have caused him to slip and fall.
Mr. Arthur disclosed that the deceased, a resident of the area, left behind one child but no wife.

Police have begun investigations into the matter, and the body has been deposited at St. Edward’s Mortuary. The Assembly Member has since instituted safety measures to prevent similar incidents at the community center.
