Depression: A Silent Threat to Ghana’s Well-being

Mental health has become a major concern in Ghanaian society today. Increasingly, many people are committing suicide and engaging in criminal acts, which is deeply worrying. In response to this alarming trend, the Mental Health Unit under the Ghana Health Service has taken it upon itself to raise public awareness about mental well-being.

As part of Mental Health Month, the spotlight has been placed on depression — a leading cause of mental health issues. Speaking on De Beat FM’s morning show with Pollo, Mr. Debrah Cudjoe, a Mental Health Officer at St. John of God Hospital, explained the seriousness of depression.“Depression is a mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities,” he said.

It can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or life circumstances, and can interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Depression is not just about feeling sad — it’s a serious condition that requires support, understanding, and often professional treatment.

Mr. Cudjoe identified genetics, neurotransmitter imbalances, and environmental factors as some of the key causes of depression. He also highlighted common behavioral changes in individuals suffering from depression, such as loss of appetite, decreased sexual desire, and social withdrawal.

Mr. Cudjoe urged the public to support individuals showing signs of depression by bringing them to the nearest health facility for help. He emphasized that early intervention can make a significant difference in managing and overcoming depression.
