Educationist Urges GES to Enforce Tough Measures Against Indiscipline in Schools

Daniel Fenyi, a prominent educationist and member of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to urgently implement strict disciplinary policies to curb rising violence and indiscipline in senior high schools across the country.

Speaking in an interview on Fabea FM with Apiah-Kubi, Mr. Fenyi expressed deep concern over a growing trend of student misconduct, including physical assaults on teachers and the presence of weapons such as guns and machetes on school premises.

Citing specific incidents—such as a teacher being attacked for preventing cheating during exams and another assaulted for enforcing dress code rules—Mr. Fenyi painted a grim picture of the current state of school safety. He also referenced a student at OKESS recently caught with a firearm, stressing the urgent need for reform.

“The school environment is no longer safe for teachers or serious-minded students. If nothing is done, teachers may be forced to take steps to defend themselves,” he warned.

Mr. Fenyi blamed political interference, particularly the implementation of the free senior high school policy without adequate disciplinary frameworks, for contributing to the breakdown in school discipline.

He is demanding a clear, public directive from GES empowering school authorities to:

Immediately dismiss any student who assaults a teacher or staff member.

Automatically expel any student found in possession of a weapon.

“If students are arming themselves, we will be forced to do the same to protect our lives,” he added, emphasizing that the situation demands immediate national attention.

Mr. Fenyi concluded that failure to act could trigger collective action from teachers determined to ensure their safety while performing their duties.
