Twifo Atti-Morkwa District, a major cocoa-producing hub in Ghana’s Central Region with over 80,000 active farmers, has become the epicenter of discontent as cocoa farmers express deep frustration and disappointment with the Mahama-led NDC government.
The farmers accuse the current administration of deceit following COCOBOD’s announcement that the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 season will remain at GH¢3,100 per bag — the same rate set during the previous administration.During the 2024 election campaign, former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC were vocal critics of the then NPP government’s cocoa pricing policy, accusing them of being insensitive and failing to match global cocoa price trends.
The NDC campaign assured cocoa farmers that, if elected, a bag of cocoa would be purchased for no less than GH¢6,000.Motivated by these promises, many cocoa farmers claim they voted overwhelmingly for the NDC, expecting a significant upward adjustment in the producer price. However, with no increase announced for the new season, the farmers feel betrayed. In a strongly worded reaction, several cocoa farmers in the district labeled the government’s actions as a “scam,” accusing the NDC of exploiting their trust and failing not just cocoa farmers, but the nation as a whole.
