Feed Ghana Coordinators Visit Western North Region to Promote Food Security Initiative

Feed Ghana coordinators have visited the Western North Region as part of a national effort to engage and educate farmers on the objectives and benefits of the newly launched government agricultural initiative.

Feed Ghana is a flagship agricultural program introduced by the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The initiative is designed to significantly increase food production, enhance national food security, and reduce the country’s dependence on food imports.

The program was officially launched by President of Ghana, together with the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, to set in motion a countrywide campaign aimed at transforming the agricultural sector.

Following the national launch, Feed Ghana coordinators have commenced regional tours to sensitize farmers on how the program will support productivity, create income-generating opportunities, and ensure food self-sufficiency.

During the visit to the Western North Region, Mr. Gordon Asubonteng, the Deputy National Coordinator in charge of Institutional Farming, highlighted the initiative’s focus on empowering farmers to increase their yields and improve their livelihoods.

“We aim to produce enough food for both consumption and sale. This will improve farmers’ livelihoods and reduce the country’s dependence on food imports,” Mr. Asubonteng explained.

He further stressed that the initiative presents a major opportunity for job creation, particularly for the youth, by supporting modern and sustainable farming practices.

“Farming is a vital part of job creation. That is why the government has introduced this program—to support youth employment and agribusiness development,” he added.

Mr. Asubonteng noted that the government will provide farming equipment and resources as part of the program’s implementation. However, he urged farmers to organize themselves into cooperatives at the district level in order to access these tools fairly and efficiently.

He also disclosed that the initiative includes provisions for irrigation farming to facilitate year-round cultivation, regardless of seasonal changes. Furthermore, the government plans to establish storage warehouses across farming districts to purchase and preserve surplus food produce, helping to stabilize market prices and reduce post-harvest losses.

The Western North Regional Minister, Mr. Wilbert Petty Brentum, commended the initiative and described it as a timely intervention to boost food production and drive economic growth in the region.

“This initiative will boost food production and contribute meaningfully to our local and national economy,” Mr. Brentum said.

He encouraged farmers to fully participate in the program and to form cooperatives to benefit from government support. Mr. Brentum also appealed to individuals and households to engage in backyard gardening to enhance domestic food supply and assist in the fight against hunger.

The stakeholder meeting, held at the Regional Department of Food and Agriculture in Juaboso District, brought together farmers, extension officers, traditional leaders, and key stakeholders in the agriculture sector. The session served as a platform to formally introduce the Feed Ghana initiative and outline the government’s vision for sustainable agricultural development.

As the Feed Ghana outreach continues in other regions, officials remain committed to ensuring that every farmer is informed, included, and supported in the national drive for food sovereignty and economic resilience.
