Four Die in Galamsey Pits in Sefwi Akontombra Within a Month

Illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, have taken a deadly turn in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region, claiming the lives of four individuals in April alone.According to local reports, the tragic incidents occurred in the communities of Ankra, Essase, and most recently, Sampa. The victims were said to have slipped and fallen into dams excavated for illegal mining operations.

Beyond the human toll, the environmental impact of galamsey in the district is escalating. Water bodies, fertile lands, cocoa farms, and vegetation are being destroyed at an alarming rate, sparking concerns among residents and stakeholders.Confirming the fatalities to Legendreport.com, the Sefwi Akontombra District Police Commander, ASP Samuel Atta, stated that the police are intensifying efforts to clamp down on illegal mining in the area.

He noted that several measures are being implemented to curb the menace.Despite these efforts, residents remain distressed. In interviews with Legendreport.com, locals made passionate appeals to the government to act urgently, warning that the district’s natural resources and livelihoods are under serious threat.
