Frederick Asante, the Western North NDC Regional Youth Organizer, has broken his silence on the alarming rise in drug abuse among the youth in Ghana, particularly the misuse of opioid drugs.
According to Mr. Asante, the trend of using opioids drugs such as,Tramadol, “Red 224,” and marijuana has become disturbingly common among the youth, with many abusing these substances in the name of fashion or for recreational purposes.
“I have observed a growing and troubling trend where many young people are engaging in behaviors that are destroying their future,” he said. “It is very pathetic to see the youth glorifying drug use as if it’s a lifestyle.”
Mr. Asante noted that some youth are taking unprescribed drugs without understanding the serious health risks involved. “I’ve seen cases where young people lose their senses, suffer heart complications, and even develop kidney problems—all due to the misuse of hard drugs,” he added.
He emphasized that these drugs are meant for people with specific health conditions and should not be used for pleasure. “Sadly, some youth now treat these drugs like food and water, especially in a bid to gain extra energy for sexual activities. This is extremely dangerous and must be stopped.”
Mr. Asante urged opinion leaders, government agencies, and other stakeholders to step up and address the situation before it causes irreversible damage to the country’s future. He called on the Ministry of Youth developmentandEmpowerment, as well as the Ministry of Health, to collaborate in combating the crisis.
He also encouraged parents to take a more active role in guiding their children and appealed to NGOs and religious leaders to join the campaign against drug abuse.
“To the youth,” he said, “your life and your destiny are in your hands. Don’t destroy your bright future with drugs. We are the future of this country—a very promising one. Let us not allow drugs to destroy our dreams and vision.”
Mr. Asante concluded by urging all stakeholders to come together and join hands in the fight against drug abuse.
