Galamsey Fight: EPA, Western North minister Forge Stronger Collaboration

The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Professor Nana Ama Klutse-Browne, paid a working visit to the Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, at the Regional Coordinating Council.

The purpose of the visit was to deliberate on pragmatic measures to address the persistent menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which continues to pose severe threats to the environment and the socio-economic well-being of the region and the nation at large.

The Minister, together with the Regional Director, officials of the Regional Coordinating Council, and other stakeholders, engaged in a fruitful indoor meeting with the EPA boss. The discussions centered on strategies to combat galamsey and safeguard the environment for future generations.

Mr.Brentum described illegal mining as a national canker that demands a collective response. He emphasized the need for unity in the fight, urging chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the clergy, youth, media, and every Ghanaian to get involved.

Professor Nana Ama Klutse-Browne echoed similar concerns, highlighting the devastating consequences of illegal mining on the environment and public health. She lamented the destruction of farmlands, cocoa plantations, water bodies, and food security due to the dangerous chemicals used in galamsey activities.

The meeting concluded with a strong call for inter-agency collaboration, community involvement, and strict enforcement of environmental laws to curb the galamsey menace. Both the EPA and the Regional Coordinating Council pledged their unwavering commitment to championing sustainable solutions and mobilizing all stakeholders in the fight against illegal mining.
