Galamsey fight: six illegal miners arrested in Juaboso

Six persons have been arrested by the Ghana Blue Water Guard in collaboration with the police for engaging in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

The arrests form part of intensified operations by the Blue Water Guard and the police aimed at clamping down on the destruction of rivers and farmlands in the area. The special operation targeted communities along the Bia River, specifically Manso Krom, Abron, Abrokofe, and Kwaukrom.

During the operation on the Bia River, the taskforce destroyed 14 changfang machines and other equipment used for illegal mining. These machines had been mounted directly in the river, posing a major threat to aquatic life and water quality. The destruction, according to officials, was to prevent the miners from resuming operations.

At Abron, the team seized one pumping machine and arrested six individuals who were caught actively engaged in mining activities. The suspects were immediately handed over to the police for processing and further investigation.

The taskforce noted that the illegal mining activities in Juaboso and its surrounding areas continue to endanger water bodies and farmlands. The Blue Water Guard has therefore intensified surveillance and pledged to sustain its efforts until the menace is completely curtailed.

Currently, the seized equipment is being kept at the Juaboso District Police Command, while the six suspects remain in custody to assist investigators. Authorities have assured the public that those found culpable will face prosecution.

The operation has been welcomed by many residents who expressed concern over the rapid destruction of the Bia River. They called for consistent enforcement to ensure that illegal miners do not return to the riverbanks after such raids.
