The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Suaman District in the Western North Region, Mr. Obour Vasco, has led an operation to flush out illegal miners—commonly known as galamseyers—from River Sui.
The exercise, carried out in collaboration with security agencies, was aimed at clamping down on illegal mining activities along river bodies in the district. The task force began its operation from River Sui, where the miners were found operating deep within the river.
Upon spotting the task force, the miners fled in haste, abandoning their local boats, changfans, and other mining equipment.
Mr. Obour emphasized his commitment to addressing illegal mining in the district. He stated that he would engage all miners in the area, along with the District Security Council, to develop a lasting solution to the issue.
He further pledged that no permits would be granted for mining in river bodies and assured the public of his dedication to protecting the district’s rivers and forests.
No arrests were made during the operation; however, four changfans were destroyed by fire as a deterrent.
