Health Ministry to Sponsor 15 Nursing Training Tutors for PhD Studies

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government, through the Ministry of Health, will sponsor 15 nursing training tutors across the country to pursue Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies.

According to the Minister, this initiative is part of government’s broader plan to upgrade the academic and professional capacity of nurse educators in Ghana. He explained that highly qualified tutors will contribute to the improvement of teaching standards and the overall quality of health professionals trained in the country.

Akandoh recalled that in the 2024 manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President John Dramani Mahama promised to prioritize the upgrading of nurse tutors. He stressed that this new sponsorship package is a direct fulfilment of that commitment.

He further revealed that the sponsorship program will begin this year, with 15 tutors selected to pursue PhD training. The government, he said, will bear the full cost of tuition and other related expenses to ensure a smooth academic journey for the beneficiaries.

The Health Minister emphasized that this initiative will not be a one-off intervention. Instead, it will become an annual program where nursing tutors are supported to attain higher academic qualifications. He added that this continuous process will build a strong foundation for sustainable health education in Ghana.

Mr. Akandoh highlighted that the policy will not only empower tutors but also improve the confidence and competence of nurses and midwives who are trained under their guidance. This, he noted, will directly enhance healthcare delivery nationwide.

The Minister made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Sefwi Wiawso Nursing and Midwifery Training School, where he interacted with staff and students. He assured the institution of government’s commitment to strengthening health education and providing opportunities for professional development.
