Helicopter crash: Inter-agency team probes cause – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is working with other security agencies to investigate the cause of the military aircraft that crashed on Wednesday morning, August 6, 2025 and claimed 8 lives.

The helicopter Z-9 caught fire after crashing, taking the lives of all eight persons on board, including two Cabinet Ministers –Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Also confirmed dead in the crash are: Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who was also a former Ashanti Regional Minister and Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

The crew members who perished in the crash include: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Head of Public Relations for the GNFS, Desmond Ackah, in an interview has indicated, that the cause of the crash is not yet known, but investigations are underway to ascertain that.

For crashes of this nature, it does not just warrant the response of the GNFS alone. A lot of factors are involved. We do inter-agency response, and we are heavily involved, especially with rescue, extrication, and any fire hazards,” he explained.

Tributes have started coming in for families of the deceased and the nation as a whole, with President John Dramani Mahama directing all flags to be flown at half-mast as the country continues to grieve.

Authorities have cleared the remains of the victims from the crash site for forensic examination and identification as investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
