Flooding Paralyzes Mpohor-Takoradi Road After Heavy Downpour

A heavy downpour early Sunday morning caused severe flooding on the Mpohor-Takoradi road, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and leaving commuters stranded.

The torrential rains, which began in the early hours, overwhelmed the existing drainage system, resulting in widespread flooding along the main stretch of the road. The rising waters quickly rendered the route impassable for vehicles, many of which were abandoned by their owners as they sought safety on higher ground.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos, with drivers attempting to navigate through deep floodwaters and pedestrians wading through the murky flow. “We were just trying to get to church, but the water was too much,” said a frustrated resident. “No one could pass, not even motorbikes.”

Residents in both Mpohor and Takoradi were heavily affected, with many forced to cancel church services, market visits, and other planned activities.

This incident has once again highlighted the recurring issue of flooding in the area. Residents say the flooding is not new and blame the inadequate drainage infrastructure for the disruption.

“We have complained several times. This happens every time it rains heavily,” said a local shopkeeper. “It’s about time the authorities did something about it.”

Community members are calling on the Metropolitan and District Assemblies, as well as the Department of Urban Roads, to urgently assess and upgrade the drainage systems. Suggestions include the construction of larger culverts, routine desilting of drains, and a comprehensive flood management plan.

As the floodwaters slowly recede, commuters are left to clean up and reflect on the disruption. Many remain hopeful that this incident will prompt meaningful action from government agencies to address the underlying issues.

Until then, residents are urged to exercise caution, especially during the rainy season, and to stay updated on weather advisories.
