Residents of Abokyikrom, a farming community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, are worried over the destructive effects of illegal sand winning on their farmlands.
According to the residents, the unchecked activities of illegal sand winners are posing a serious threat to their livelihoods. They revealed that sand winners have invaded their farmlands without permission, destroying valuable crops including cassava, maize, cocoa, and palm trees.
The farmers say the destruction has led to a drastic decline in their harvest, raising fears of potential food shortages in the area. The farmers have threatened to attack the sand winners if their activities are not controlled.
The Assembly Member for the area, Solomon Nkansah, has joined the call for immediate intervention. He appealed to relevant authorities to step in and stop the sand winning operations before the situation worsens and leads to famine in the community.
