The District Chief Executive for Juaboso District, Alexander Adu Quist, has clarified rumours surrounding the district’s decision not to hold the usual march-past to mark this year’s Ghana Independence Day on 6 March.
Speaking in a phone interview with Emmanuel Sowah, Mr. Adu Quist explained that the decision followed a directive from the Western North Regional Coordinating Council, which asked all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to celebrate the occasion with a modest budget of GHS 20,000.
According to him, the communication from the regional coordinating council provided several options for districts to choose from in commemorating the national event. These included a quiz competition, football competition, cultural competition, or a march-past involving a limited number of selected schools.
Mr. Adu Quist stated that the district assembly opted for a quiz competition as a way of helping students refresh their knowledge about Ghana’s history and the significance of Independence Day.
He noted that although many students celebrate the day each year, some do not fully understand the historical importance behind the celebration.
“This initiative is to help students learn and understand why we celebrate Independence Day,” he said.
The DCE explained that since this is the first time the district is organising such a quiz, participation will initially be limited to schools within the Juaboso Circuit.
He disclosed that students from Juaboso Senior High School will participate in the competition, which will be organised as inter-house contests among the school’s houses.
Mr. Adu Quist added that prizes will be awarded to the winning house at the end of the competition.
He further revealed that any remaining funds from the allocated budget would be used to rehabilitate and paint some schools within the district.
The quiz competition is scheduled to take place at the dining hall of Juaboso Senior High School as part of activities marking this year’s Independence Day celebration in the distric
