Kofi Morgan Foundation Launches First Breast Cancer Education Workshop to Combat Rising Cases in Ghana

The Ghana Breast Cancer Coalition Project, under the Rural and Community Development Initiative of the Kofi Morgan Foundation, has successfully held the first edition of its Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Workshop in collaboration with the Church of Pentecost, Bejewahum Assembly, Achimota.

The event, which took place over the weekend, brought together community members, health professionals, and church leaders to educate participants on the dangers of breast cancer, the importance of regular screening, and early detection.

According to the foundation, the initiative aims to tackle the growing challenge of breast cancer in Ghana, which remains the most common cancer among women in the country. Statistics from recent years paint a worrying picture—in 2022 alone, over 5,000 new cases were recorded, representing 18.4% of all cancer diagnoses, with more than 2,300 women losing their lives to the disease. By 2024, new cases continued to rise, with the case-fatality rate standing at almost 47%, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and low screening rates.

The workshop forms part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to bridge the knowledge gap in rural and urban communities, encourage preventive health practices, and empower women to take proactive steps toward their wellbeing.

The Kofi Morgan Foundation extended its gratitude to the dedicated team members, medical experts, and leadership of the Church of Pentecost for their immense contribution to the success of the programme.

The Foundation reiterated its commitment to sustaining such educational campaigns, emphasizing that awareness and early detection remain the most effective tools to reduce breast cancer fatalities in Ghana.
