Lands Minister Rejects Calls for ‘Shoot and Kill’ in Galamsey Fight

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Kofi Armah Boah, has clarified that government will not adopt a “shoot and kill” strategy in its fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. He described such calls as misguided and stressed that they do not provide a lasting solution to the menace.

The Minister noted that many Ghanaians, including civil society organizations, have urged government to declare a state of emergency or authorize deadly force against illegal miners. However, he emphasized that government is focused on a more humane and constructive approach to addressing the issue.

Speaking at Bibiani in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, Mr. Armah Boah said the fight against illegal mining is centered on sensitization, education and active engagement with communities. According to him, these methods will help people understand the harmful effects of galamsey on the environment and human life.

“The nation is under no illusion that we can end illegal mining through armed force. What will work is winning the hearts and minds of the people. Through education and dialogue, they will come to realize that destroying our environment is destroying our future,” he stated.

He added that government’s approach is to appeal to the conscience of illegal miners, helping them appreciate the need to protect water bodies, farmlands, and forests. By doing so, he explained, the country will not only protect its natural resources but also secure the soul of the nation.

Mr. Armah Boah further stressed that the fight against galamsey is a collective responsibility. He called on all citizens to play their part in safeguarding the environment, adding that it cannot be left to government and security agencies alone.

The Minister gave this assurance when he joined stakeholders at a cooperative and skills training programme in Bibiani. The initiative, he said, forms part of government’s efforts to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices across the country.
