The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Mahama to immediately dismiss Dr. Hanna Bissiw as administrator of the Minerals Development Fund and CEO of the National Employment Agency, Malik Basintale over what he describes as “inflammatory and violence-endorsing statements” made by the two public officials.
The Minority caucus in a press release signed by Afenyo-Markin, argued that the conducts of the two National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executives pose a direct threat to Ghana’s democratic stability and cannot be left unchecked.
“President Mahama must immediately dismiss Hanna Bissiw and Malik Basintale as public officials for their inflammatory and violence-endorsement statements.” Part of the letter reads.
The lawmaker did not mince words in holding President Mahama directly responsible for what he described as growing political tension and acts of intimidation linked to the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.
“President Mahama, the choice is yours. History will judge you by the decision you make in the next 48 hours. Choose wisely, for the future of Ghana’s democracy depends on it. The Minority Leader charged.
He added that the NPP will not be silent or passive as violent rhetoric and orchestrated attacks continue to threaten the sanctity of the general peace of the country.
“We will not rest until Ghana’s democracy is secured from those who would destroy it through violence and intimidation,” Afenyo-Markin emphasised.
The latest developments come in the wake of alleged political violence during the just ended rerun in parts of Ablekuma North, where former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson and deputy national organiser of the NPP as a well as some journalists were physically assaulted by persons allegedly aligned with the NDC.
Both Dr. Hanna Bissiw, National Women’s Organiser of the NDC, and Malik Basintale, the party’s Deputy Communications Officer, have recently come under fire for comments the NPP deems as reckless and inciteful. While the NDC has defended their officials as exercising free speech in response to provocation, the NPP has accused them of incitement that could undermine Ghana’s peace.
