Minority Stages Walkout from Parliament Ahead of Mid-Year Budget Presentation Over Ablekuma North By-Election Concerns

The Minority in Parliament staged a walkout on Thursday afternoon, just minutes before the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review. Their action was in protest against what they described as electoral violence and irregularities that occurred during the recent Ablekuma North by-election.

Led by the Minority chiefwhip, the MPs exited the chamber in a coordinated manner, leaving their seats empty as a sign of disapproval. They expressed dissatisfaction over the conduct of the Electoral Commission and alleged that the by-election process was marred by unfair practices and incidents that compromised the credibility of the outcome.

The walkout took place as the House prepared to receive the Finance Minister, who was scheduled to deliver the budget statement outlining government’s fiscal performance for the first half of the year. The presentation is also expected to introduce new measures aimed at addressing current economic challenges and funding gaps.

Despite the protest by the Minority, the House continued its proceedings with the Majority members present. The Finance Minister is yet to begin his presentation, which remains a critical moment in the nation’s economic calendar.

The Minority’s action has added a dramatic twist to the day’s parliamentary session and signals deepening political tensions as the country approaches the next general election.
