NAIMOS Arrests Two Chinese Nationals for Illegal Mining at Pankese in Birim North

A National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) Taskforce deployed to the Eastern Region has arrested two Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining activities at Pankese in the Birim North District.

The suspects, identified as Li Yongjin and Nou Chin Haw, were apprehended on Saturday, 3rd December 2026, around 9:45 a.m., while actively mining illegally in the area. Their operations have reportedly caused extensive destruction to forest reserves and cocoa farmlands, as well as severe pollution of nearby water bodies, including the Birim River.

During the operation, the Taskforce immobilized two excavators used by the illegal miners by removing their monitors and control boards, rendering them inoperative due to the unavailability of lowbed services for transportation.

Several other illegal mining equipment and materials were destroyed, and makeshift structures erected to support the galamsey operations were set ablaze.

The team also seized a Toyota Tundra pickup truck with registration number AS 8120–20, which was found at the site and reportedly used by the suspects.

Authorities say the arrests form part of intensified efforts by NAIMOS and the government to clamp down on illegal mining activities destroying Ghana’s environment and natural resources.
