The National Communications Authority (NCA) has shut down three radio stations operating in the Western North Region for breaching regulatory requirements.
The action follows an audit and inspection exercise conducted by the NCA to assess the compliance status of broadcasting stations within the region. According to Mr. Alexander Hedidor, the Zonal Manager for the Western, Central, and Western North regions, the affected stations were operating without the required authorization from the NCA.
He explained that before a radio station is granted full authorization, it is first issued a two-year provisional permit by the NCA to set up operations. After the establishment phase, the station is required to invite the Authority for inspection to ensure that its operations meet the technical and service quality standards necessary for final approval.
“None of the three radio stations had the requisite authorization permits,” Mr. Hedidor revealed. “They were operating illegally and are not captured in our official system. This poses a potential threat to national security, as we cannot monitor the content being broadcast to the public.”
The affected stations are:
Ehan FM 90.3 located in Juaboso
Abiyaa Radio 94.7 in Sefwi Bodi
Sompahene FM 102.3 in Sefwi Akontombra
Mr. Hedidor has ordered the immediate cessation of operations of the three stations until further notice.
