Neglect of Medical Equipment Will Not Be Tolerated – Health Minister Warns

The Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called on health facility management teams across the country to adopt a strong culture of maintenance to ensure the longevity and efficiency of medical equipment provided by the government.

He stated that while the government continues to invest significantly in supplying vital medical equipment to improve healthcare delivery, the lack of proper care and routine maintenance by some facility managers is undermining these efforts. According to the Minister, many managers neglect the equipment once it is delivered, leading to damage and eventual breakdown, which could otherwise be avoided.

Mr. Akandoh emphasized that it is the responsibility of facility managers and health workers to safeguard all resources provided to their institutions. He noted that when equipment is available, yet not properly maintained, the blame falls squarely on management. However, if resources are genuinely unavailable, that is a different matter entirely.

The Minister further explained that most facilities receive payments through the National Health Insurance Scheme or charge service fees, and therefore, they are expected to allocate a portion of these funds toward the maintenance or replacement of equipment. He expressed concern that some facilities fail to do so, only to return later to the Ministry requesting the same equipment again.

He cautioned that such irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated. If he visits a health facility and discovers that management is not up to the task, he will not hesitate to relieve them of their duties and appoint competent individuals who can effectively manage the resources provided.

Mr. Akandoh made these remarks during a presentation ceremony in Juaboso, where he donated four neonatal incubators to the Juaboso Government Hospital and one to the Kofi Krom S.D.A. Hospital. He also handed over ten brand-new motorcycles to the Juaboso District Health Directorate to enhance healthcare accessibility and outreach services.

Additionally, the Minister confirmed that several casual workers at the Juaboso Government Hospital, some of whom have served for periods ranging from five to fifteen years, have now been granted permanent appointments, recognizing their dedication and commitment to service.
