“No One Is Above the Law” – Minister Responds to Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest

The Western North Regional Minister, Mr. Wilbert Petty Brentum, has responded to the recent arrest of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The Minister emphasized that no individual is above the law, regardless of political status or social influence. Mr. Brentum reiterated the vital need for accountability and integrity, especially for those entrusted with the nation’s assets and resources.

We must exercise the highest level of responsibility in our actions, particularly on matters that impact national resources and human livelihoods,” he stated.The Minister voiced deep concern over allegations that Chairman Wontumi engaged in illegal mining activities within protected areas—including forest reserves, sacred groves, and water bodies—without the requisite permits.

He warned of the serious environmental harm such activities cause, including:Deforestation and land degradationPollution of water sourcesThreats to biodiversity and food securityFurthermore, mr.Brentum condemned the alleged misappropriation of a $45 million COCOBOD road contract fund and a facility secured from Exim Bank, originally earmarked for critical infrastructure.He described these alleged offenses as “uncultured and unacceptable breaches of public trust”, insisting that the law must take its full course.

He issued a stern warning to all individuals and corporate entities involved in illegal mining and financial malpractice within the Western North Region, stating that such acts will not go unpunished.The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, environmental protection, and sustainable national development.
