NPP’s Internal Elections Strategy Reeks of Dictatorship and Corruption – Emmanuel Martey

By Emmanuel Sowah

Mr Emmanuel Martey, a leading communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Juaboso Constituency, has strongly condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he describes as a blatant subversion of democratic principles within the party’s internal electoral processes.

In a sharp critique, Martey accused the NPP of manipulating its internal election calendar to favor Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential ambitions. According to him, recent developments within the NPP suggest a deliberate and undemocratic move to hold the presidential primaries before any other internal elections— a decision that allegedly serves the interest of the current party leadership aligned with Bawumia.

“The NPP has once again proved that its leadership structure is fueled by dictatorship and corruption,” Martey
asserted. “Traditionally, internal elections have always started from the grassroots level through to the national, but the current leadership has reversed this order to secure short-term political gains.”

Martey claims that the decision to bypass constituency and regional elections before the presidential primaries is a calculated attempt to prevent the removal of current executives who are believed to be loyal to Bawumia. “They know that if those elections are held first, about 90% of the current executives who back Bawumia would be voted out. That would completely derail his chances of becoming the flagbearer,” he stated.

He further described the move as “daylight thievery, political robbery, and a betrayal of democratic values.” According to him, the justification provided by the NPP—that conducting the presidential primaries earlier would allow more time to resolve internal issues—is hollow and misleading.

“One misstep can lead to disaster regardless of how much time you claim to have afterward. Well-structured, transparent, and inclusive internal elections are what prevent chaos, not hurried primaries that sideline genuine party democracy,” he emphasized.

Martey also raised questions about the NPP’s capacity to manage national affairs when its own internal governance is allegedly plagued with manipulation and short-sighted decisions. “Their entire approach signals a preference for power over principle, and it clearly shows a party that prioritizes winning at all costs rather than maintaining internal cohesion and credibility.”

The NDC communicator called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and to reject what he describes as a dangerous precedent of authoritarianism within a major political party.

“The NPP does not deserve another chance near power,” Martey concluded. “Their actions betray the very democratic values that should guide a party in leadership.”
