Police have intercepted a commercial bus transporting more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Accra to northern Ghana.
The operation took place at the Asankare Police barrier in the Ashanti Region, where officers stopped a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21 during a routine inspection.
According to a police situational report (SITREP) sighted by Graphic Online, the bus, which was headed from Accra to Tamale en route to Savelugu, was carrying 1,050 AAA and BB cartridge ammunition concealed in a sack.
The bus was being driven by Mohammed Gzali, aged 42, with his assistant, Mohammed Jabir, 22. The vehicle had 45 passengers on board.

“During the routine check, officers became suspicious that the driver might be conveying incriminating items. The Divisional Commander was immediately informed and subsequently arrived at the scene together with the Juaso District Commander and the District Crime Officer. Upon their arrival, an extensive search of the vehicle was conducted,” the SITREP indicated.
The search led to the discovery of the ammunition hidden in one of the sacks on board. When questioned, the driver reportedly told police that the parcel had been handed over to him by an unknown person in Accra to be delivered to one “Oboye” in Tamale.
The bus has since been impounded, and the ammunition retained as exhibits. Both the driver and his assistant are in police custody assisting with investigations.

Police say investigations are ongoing to trace the source and intended recipients of the ammunition.
