press statement from NPP commucations directorate in the western north region

PRESIDENT Mahama has betrayed Ghanaians on Galamsey. A clear abandonment of the the people ’S trust

Fellow Citizens,

On September 10, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama stood before the press and the people of Ghana. When asked about the galamsey menace that is destroying our nation, his response was nothing short of a betrayal. He refused to declare a state of emergency, claiming that existing laws are enough, even as our rivers turn to poison, our forest reserves vanish, and our cocoa industry faces collapse.

But Ghanaians remember!

Mr. President, was it not you who accused your predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, not having the will power to fight galamsey because his own appointees were neck-deep in galamsey? Is that the same reason you now refuse to declare a state of emergency because your own people and appointees are involved?

Mr. President, in opposition you pledged to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat and eradicate galamsey. What happened to that pledge? Was it only empty campaign talk?

Mr. President, you promised to repeal L.I. 2462 to ban mining in our forest reserves. Where is that social covenant you signed with Ghanaians on December 7, 2024?

Mr. President, you loudly supported calls for a state of emergency to end galamsey when in opposition. Why have you suddenly turned against the very principle you championed?

Today, your once-loud voice against galamsey has gone into hiding. Your silence and inaction are a direct betrayal of the people’s trust. You have abandoned the cries of Ghana Water, ignored the European Union’s threats to ban our cocoa exports, and turned a blind eye to the rising deaths and destruction caused by galamsey.

Mr. President, by your weak response yesterday, you have signaled to the galamsey cartel that they have a free hand. You have weakened the security setup, opened the gates for more aggressive illegal mining, and set a dangerous precedent that history will record as one of the greatest betrayals of trust in our political history.

But it is not too late, Mr. President. Redeem yourself by:

Declaring a State of Emergency now.

Fulfilling your pledge of using AI to combat galamsey.

Allowing the military to take full control of the fight against galamsey.

Restrict GOLDBOD from buying gold from galamsey operators.

Repeal L.I. 2462 to stop mining in forest reserves.

Setup a special court across the regions to deal solely with galamsey cases.

Revoke your order of deporting foreign galamseyers and let them face Ghanaian law.

Sack and prosecute all appointees complicit in galamsey activities.

Fellow Ghanaians, the President and his NDC government have chosen politics over people, power over principle, and betrayal over trust. The time has come for us to hold them accountable. Our lands, waters, cocoa, and future generations are at stake.

Enough is enough. We will not sit by and watch President Mahama forsake Ghana.

Signed,
