GAAM LAUDS GOVERNMENT FOR INITIATING PAYMENT OF ASSEMBLY MEMBERS’ ALLOWANCES
The Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) commends the government, under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for initiating the process to fulfill a key campaign promise — the payment of monthly allowances to assembly members across the country.
This directive, communicated through the Minister for Local Government, calls for the submission of names of all assembly members by the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to their respective regional offices and ultimately to the Ministry. This important step affirms the government’s commitment to recognizing the critical role assembly members play in local governance and national development.
Speaking on behalf of the association, GAAM National President, Hon. Ackah Nelson Frank, expressed profound gratitude to the government for this long-awaited initiative. He stated that this move will significantly motivate assembly members to intensify their efforts in serving their communities, free from undue financial burdens.
Hon. Ackah Nelson Frank further urged all assembly members to work in unity and support the NDC government in delivering on its development agenda. He also called on the government to ensure that the allowance payments are carried out in a timely and transparent manner to maintain trust and accountability.
This initiative is expected to improve the overall effectiveness of local governance by empowering assembly members to better represent their constituents and actively participate in policy implementation at the grassroots level.
GAAM has pledged its full cooperation with the government to ensure the successful rollout of this initiative. The association will also provide continuous support and guidance to its members to ensure proper utilization of the allowances for the benefit of their communities.
The decision to pay these allowances reflects the government’s strong commitment to decentralization and local governance. It underscores the crucial role of assembly members in strengthening democracy and promoting sustainable development at the local level.
Assembly members, who have long advocated for regular remuneration, have welcomed this development. It is expected to significantly boost morale and enhance their performance in both legislative and oversight responsibilities.
By honoring this campaign promise, the government has demonstrated its dedication to improving local governance. Ultimately, this initiative will not only empower assembly members but also lead to better service delivery and positive transformation across communities in Ghana.
GAAM expresses its sincere appreciation to the government for this bold and commendable initiative and remains committed to partnering with all stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation.
