Private Schools Hail President Mahama for Inclusion in Free SHS Program

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has applauded the government’s decision to include private senior high schools in the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Professor Tuurosong Damasus, President of GNAPS, described the policy shift as a timely and strategic intervention. He noted that the move is expected to ease overcrowding in public schools and expand access to quality secondary education.

“This initiative is something we have long advocated for,” Professor Damasus stated. “Private schools proposed this inclusion to the government as a solution to the congestion caused by the double-track system in public schools.”

The new policy, introduced under the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama, will now allow eligible students to enroll in private SHSs under the Free SHS scheme, a development Professor Damasus says will positively impact the private education sector.

He emphasized that while private institutions are prepared to take on the responsibility, timely disbursement of funds from the government will be critical to ensure smooth operations.

“Private schools are ready to participate fully and deliver quality education, but prompt release of resources will be essential,” he added.

The inclusion of private schools in the Free SHS program is also expected to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians while enhancing student placement options across the country.

Professor Damasus concluded by expressing optimism that this new development will promote equity in access to education and strengthen Ghana’s overall education system.
