Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has officially opened Aquaculture Ghana 2025, an event organized under the theme “Transforming Ghana’s Aquaculture Sector: Innovation, Inclusion, and Job Creation for Food Security and Economic Growth.”
The Vice President noted that the popular Akan saying, “Sika wɔ nsu mu”—meaning “there is money in the water”—perfectly captures the essence of the nation’s growing blue economy and the immense potential of the aquaculture industry.
Organized by the Chamber of Aquaculture, the event brought together policymakers, government officials, investors, and key stakeholders from across the fisheries and aquaculture value chain. The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Emelia Arthur, was also in attendance.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the critical role of the aquaculture sector in Ghana’s socio-economic development, emphasizing that fish accounts for about 60 percent of the country’s protein consumption and provides livelihoods for millions of Ghanaians. She acknowledged the sector’s progress but called for greater efforts to reduce import dependence and to promote safe, sustainable practices through the effective enforcement of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act.
She further underscored the integration of aquaculture into the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, noting that the Secretariat will collaborate closely with stakeholders to ensure continuous and efficient operations under the Grow24 initiative.

The Vice President commended the Fisheries Commission and the Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development for their continued efforts in strengthening Ghana’s aquaculture ecosystem. She reaffirmed government’s commitment to positioning Ghana as a regional leader in sustainable aquaculture, creating more jobs for youth and women, and attracting responsible investment into the sector.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang officially opened Aquaculture Ghana 2025, encouraging all participants to engage in fruitful deliberations and to develop innovative strategies that will drive the next phase of growth for the aquaculture industry.
