Residents of Bogoso Bogumu Alignment Raise Alarm Over Dangerous Galamsey Activities

Residents of Bogoso Bogumu Alignment, a community in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region, are appealing to government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to stop the growing illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, in their area.

The illegal operations, which have spread into the township, are creating fear and panic among residents and posing serious threats to lives and property. water bodies, in the area have reportedly been destroyed due to the illegal mining.

Despite government’s efforts to fight galamsey through joint security operations such as NAIMOS and Blue Water Guard, situation in Bogoso Bogumu Alignment continues to worsen as miners operate openly without fear of arrest.

The community chairman, Eric Nana Kwesi Mensah, described the situation as dangerous, noting that the activities of the miners have caused severe destruction to the environment and put residents’ lives at risk. He indicated that the miners often fire warning shots, pollute water sources, and operate heavy machines at all hours, creating unbearable noise and fear among the people.

He added that although complaints have been reported to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the police, no significant action has been taken to address the issue. He urged authorities to prioritize the safety of residents and investigate the activities of the illegal miners to prevent further harm.

Residents who spoke to legendreport expressed deep frustration over the lack of action from authorities. They said all nearby water bodies and wells have been contaminated, making it difficult to access clean water. Many also lamented the constant gunshots at night, which have deprived them of sleep and peace of mind.

Some parents in the community expressed fear for their children’s safety, noting that several uncovered mining pits pose serious danger. One resident shared a tragic story of losing his nephew, who reportedly fell into a galamsey pit and died.

The residents are calling on the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and President to intervene immediately. They said the President promised to end galamsey, yet the menace has reached their doorsteps, and they are now pleading with him to act swiftly to save lives and restore peace in the community.
