Sayerano School Project “More Dangerous Than Before” – DCE Raises Alarm

The ongoing renovation of Sayerano Anglican Primary School in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region has sparked outrage and concern among local authorities and residents, as the project has not only stalled but appears to be endangering students more than the original dilapidated structure.Sayerano, a rural community in the Juaboso District, is home to the Sayerano Anglican Primary School.

The school was originally built by local artisans, known locally as Attakwame builders, and consists of six classrooms. Due to the building’s deteriorating state, the Juaboso District Assembly awarded a renovation contract in 2022 to Kiafe Ventures at a cost of GHS 353,523.45.

The contractor was expected to complete the work within five months. However, as of May 5, 2025—more than two years after the expected completion date—the project remains unfinished.

According to documentation submitted to the Assembly, the contractor claims to have completed 80% of the work. But an inspection by the newly appointed District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Alexander Adu Quist, the District Director, and engineers revealed serious structural flaws and poor workmanship.

The DCE expressed deep concern after the site visit, stating that the contractor’s work is substandard and hazardous to students. The inspection team found:Misaligned and improperly placed support pillarsPoorly finished floors developing potholesOld, reused doors instead of new onesA poorly constructed “disability-friendly” ramp that students cannot safely useSpeaking with the acting headteacher, Mr. Danso Jonas, it was revealed that school officials had monitored the project from the start and raised multiple concerns with the contractor about the quality of work.

Unfortunately, these concerns were ignored, resulting in tensions between the contractor and the school staff. Mr. Jonas confirmed that the disability access ramp was unusable and that cracks were now appearing throughout the building, making it dangerous for pupils.

DCE Adu Quist emphasized that the original scope of the renovation included repairs to the building structure, doors, roofing, flooring, disability access, and the provision of a mechanized borehole. He was shocked to find that despite the contractor’s claim of 80% completion, the work was poorly executed and posed a serious safety risk.

The contractor has caused more harm than good,” the DCE said. “The building may collapse due to the shoddy construction. The steps are not accessible for children, and many parts of the building are already cracking.”He also revealed that the contractor had collected two-thirds of the total payment but failed to deliver quality work.

When invited to discuss the issues following the engineers’ assessment, the contractor reportedly refused to attend the meeting.Mr. Adu Quist has vowed to ensure that Kiafe Ventures returns to the site to properly complete the project and address the damages caused. He stressed that, regardless of the project timeline having expired, the contractor is still responsible for completing the work to standard.“As DCE, I will not allow this negligence to stand.

The safety of our students and the proper use of public funds must be protected,” he said. The DCE further pledged to review all projects initiated under the previous administration to ensure quality control and accountability.
