Sefwi Wiawso MP join Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology Visit to AngloGold Ashanti

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology has embarked on a three-day working visit to the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine as part of its constitutional oversight responsibilities.

The fact-finding visit aims to assess the mine’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and evaluate its level of compliance with Ghana’s environmental regulations, particularly Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 246, amid concerns about the impact of mining activities on water bodies in mining communities.

The delegation included Kofi Benteh Afful, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, who joined other members of the Committee in the exercise.

The Committee’s objective is not to target or victimise any company but to promote responsible, safe, and sustainable mining practices that safeguard the environment and the wellbeing of citizens.

“Our goal is to ensure that mining in Ghana is done responsibly and sustainably. Parliament remains empowered to recommend appropriate actions where violations are established.

Management of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, led by Managing Director Ing. Samuel Pope, assured the Committee of the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and full compliance with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Minerals Commission, and Lands Commission, as well as adherence to international best practices.

The visit forms part of Parliament’s broader commitment to ensuring accountable governance and sustainable resource management for national development.
