Seven Months in Office: Akontombra MP account on Achievements and Plans Ahead

The Akontombra District Assembly has held its General Assembly meeting to account to stakeholders on achievements and plans for the future. The meeting brought together assembly members, heads of departments, traditional leaders, and community representatives. As part of the process, the Member of Parliament for Akontombra, Pious Kwame Nkuah, presented a detailed report on his seven months in office.

In the area of education, the MP highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting students in the district. He facilitated ten GETFund scholarships for tertiary students and purchased 110 admission forms for applicants seeking entry into various tertiary institutions, including nursing and midwifery training colleges, colleges of education, and public universities. Out of these, 40 candidates successfully gained admission. Additionally, he donated 400 mathematical sets to candidates for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The MP also followed up on several abandoned GETFund projects, including girls’ dormitories, classroom blocks, and an administration block at Akontombra Senior High School, which are expected to resume soon.

On health, he reported that over 1,200 residents benefited from free eye screening exercises in collaboration with Daybreak Vision and Eye Clinic. More than 100 elderly people received free eyeglasses, while others underwent free surgeries. A second screening exercise in partnership with the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital also provided surgical interventions for over 100 residents, with additional procedures scheduled for children at Akontombra Hospital. The MP further disclosed that efforts are underway to upgrade Nsawora Health Centre following engagements with the Ministry of Health.

Regarding infrastructure, the MP explained that questions raised in Parliament have resulted in assurances from the Roads Ministry that major roads in Akontombra have been awarded to contractors and work will soon resume. On employment, he announced that 26 Ghana Blue Water Guards, 27 forest guards, 10 recruits into national security, and two into the Ghana Standards Authority have been secured for the district.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Joseph Appiah, also presented the Assembly’s account, noting that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have posted directors to strengthen local administration. He commended security agencies in the district for maintaining peace, especially during recent tensions in Nsawora and Kofi Krom, and urged collaboration with traditional authorities to regulate funeral rites to prevent conflicts.

On illegal mining, the DCE stated that security agencies, supported by the Regional Taskforce, have intensified operations to protect river bodies and flush out illegal miners. He emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting responsible mining through cooperative mining initiatives and skills training. Twenty-six youths from the district have already been trained to support anti-galamsey operations.

Mr. Appiah further disclosed that Akontombra has benefited from the government’s employment support programs, including the recruitment of community police assistants, fire service assistants, health assistants, and ambulance service assistants. The first batch of police and fire service recruits have already completed their training and are ready to support service delivery in the district.

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for unity and collaboration among stakeholders to sustain peace, accelerate development, and support government initiatives to improve livelihoods in the district.
