Students on Tramadol, Weed – Teachers Losing Control in SHS

The Asistance Headmistress of academics Asankragua Senior High School, Madam Mercy Nii Quaye, has expressed concern over the increasing level of indiscipline among students, stating that it is a major contributor to the rise of social vices in society.Speaking during a drug awareness program organized by Mindz Impact Foundation, she revealed that immoral behavior among students is becoming rampant both in schools and in the wider community.

According to her, the inability of teachers to discipline students due to human rights restrictions has worsened the situation.“Parents and guardians often support the bad behavior of their children and prevent teachers from taking corrective action,” she said. “As a result, some students come to school under the influence of hard drugs such as weed and Tramadol.

She also disclosed that some students even engage in physical altercations with teachers when confronted over such behavior. Madam Quaye called on parents and stakeholders to intervene and help protect the future of the youth.

Nana Tano Kabaah II, the Chief of Enchi Kwahu, also voiced his concerns. He blamed political authorities for limiting the powers of traditional leaders due to human rights laws, making it difficult to tackle societal issues effectively. He noted that many communities lack police stations and courts, which makes enforcing laws against drug use and other vices challenging.“The government should create laws that empower traditional authorities to address these problems,” he urged.

Nana Kabaah also advised the youth to avoid taking drugs not prescribed by medical professionals, warning that drug abuse poses serious threats to their health and future. “Remember, the future is shaped by the actions you take today,” he added.

Student Share Their ViewsSome students at Asankragua Senior High School also shared their perspectives. Deborah Esi Nkrumah, the Assistant Girls’ Prefect, warned her peers against drug use, stating, “Drugs take away your sense and the respect you have in society. Think about your future and stay away from drugs.

Mindz Impact Foundation’s AdvocacyMr. Evans Apochi, the founder of Mindz Impact Foundation, explained that his organization is committed to fighting drug addiction among the youth. “I grew up in a community where drug abuse was common. I decided to make a difference by helping young people stay away from drugs,” he said.He called on the youth to speak up when in doubt or facing pressure and to seek guidance from trusted individuals.

“Drugs are not a solution. They destroy lives and bring shame to families,” he stressed.Mr. Apochi also urged the media to stop glorifying harmful behaviors for the sake of trends, particularly on social media platforms. He encouraged society to support addicts with compassion and counseling rather than rejection. The event was part of an awareness campaign held at Asankragua Senior High School by Mindz Impact Foundation.
