A mother and her young son have lost their lives after being struck by lightning during a downpour at Asante Mampong Akyeremade in the Ashanti region on Sunday, December 14, 2024.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John on Monday, December 15, 2025, Assemblyman of Akyeremade, Kwame Nkrumah, said the unfortunate event happened shortly after the rains began.
The victims, who were reportedly indoors at the time, were fatally hit by the lightning bolt, causing immediate shock and grief among residents of the community.
He said local authorities and emergency services rushed to the scene but could do little to save the victims. The bodies have since been conveyed to a nearby morgue for preservation and autopsy.
He described the mother as a well-known and respected figure in the area.
According to him, the incident has left the community in mourning, with many expressing disbelief over the sudden loss.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised the public to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms, including avoiding open spaces and seeking shelter indoors, as lightning strikes continue to pose risks during the current rainy season.
The local assembly and NADMO are expected to visit the bereaved family and provide support as investigations continue.
