UN Patrols South Sudan Refugee Camp After Deadly Attack

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has stepped up security efforts at Makpandu refugee camp in Yambio, located in Western Equatoria, following a deadly attack that claimed the life of a Sudanese refugee.

Peacekeepers conducted patrols in and around the camp to assess the situation and work closely with local authorities, security forces, and refugee leaders. The goal is to strengthen civilian protection, prevent further violence, and rebuild trust among displaced families.

Makpandu camp, which hosts thousands fleeing conflict in Sudan, was meant to be a place of safety. However, increasing insecurity has left many refugees living in fear once again.

One refugee, Bekia Mahadi, who lives in the camp with her eight children, described the situation as deeply distressing, with constant anxiety due to repeated attacks.

Residents report that armed individuals often enter the camp, firing weapons, intimidating families, and looting or destroying property. As a result, some refugees have been forced to sleep in nearby bush areas to avoid harm.

UNMISS says continued patrols, stronger cooperation with authorities, and community engagement are essential to restoring safety and stability for vulnerable populations who have already escaped violence once before
