Unlicensed Firearms in Mining Communities Raise Public Safety Concerns

Legendreport has monitored activities within several mining communities in the Western North Region that pose a potential threat to public safety.

Our reporters have observed actions by some private security personnel hired by miners that are generating fear and panic among local residents. These individuals—often referred to as site guards or “manchos”—have been seen openly carrying firearms within communities while riding motorbikes or walking around the streets.

Investigations suggest that many of these firearms may not be licensed, yet they are frequently displayed in public view. This raises serious concerns about legality, public safety, and security control.

Residents in the affected areas have expressed growing unease, especially in districts such as Aowin Municipal, Juaboso, Akontombra, and Suaman (Dadieso). Although no confirmed attacks involving these armed individuals have been reported, their visible presence with exposed weapons is unsettling to many, especially children and parents.

There are concerns about the possibility of accidental discharge, and whether or not these individuals have undergone proper training or licensing. Children have begun asking questions about the weapons, and parents are finding it difficult to provide appropriate answers.

While the purpose of these weapons may be to protect mining sites, the method of openly carrying them in civilian spaces—particularly while seated on motorbikes—has become a point of contention. Residents believe that even if such weapons are needed for protection, they should not be publicly displayed.

The findings from our reporters raise the following important questions:

Do these private security personnel have the legal right to carry firearms openly in public spaces?

Are the firearms licensed and approved by the appropriate authorities?

What does the law say about the possession and handling of firearms and ammunition?

What are the implications of allowing armed individuals to operate freely in civilian areas?

How many of such weapons are currently in circulation in the region?

These issues call for urgent attention from the District Security Councils, Municipal Assemblies, and the Regional Security Council. It is important to assess the legality of the activities being carried out by private security personnel, verify firearm licenses, and take necessary action to protect public safety.

Legendreport urges the relevant authorities to implement strong regulatory measures to address and control this growing concern before it escalates into a serious security threat.
