WE WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL THE FIGHT AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING IS WON – CATHOLIC BISHOP DECLARES

The Catholic Bishop of Sefwi Wiawso and Western North Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Most Reverend Samuel Nkuah Boateng, has firmly reiterated the Church’s commitment to the ongoing battle against illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey. He described the practice as a grave national concern that continues to wreak havoc on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and communities.

Lending his support to a recent statement issued by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Bishop emphasized that illegal mining remains one of the most serious afflictions facing the nation today. He underscored the devastating impact of Galamsey on the country’s development and livelihoods, and declared that the Church will not relent in its efforts until the fight is decisively won.

Responding to calls from some quarters for the declaration of a state of emergency, Most Reverend Nkuah Boateng stated that such extreme measures may not be necessary if the government shows the political will to enforce existing laws. He stressed the need for the state to put in place and implement practical, effective strategies to curb the menace once and for all.

The Bishop urged the country’s leadership to prioritize sustainable and responsible mining practices. He called for the enforcement of mining regulations and the strengthening of institutions tasked with protecting the environment and natural resources.

Finally, he appealed for a united front in tackling illegal mining, stressing the importance of collaboration among government agencies, civil society, traditional leaders, and citizens. Most Reverend Nkuah Boateng also called on media practitioners across the country to boldly speak out and raise awareness about the harmful consequences of Galamsey.
